Heartseeker (Dragoon Archetype)

Heartseeker

While the most famous holders of the spear will always be the dragoons, some live only to master its basics. The spear is a pure weapon in their hands, existing solely for one purpose: to impale their foes. There is no place for fancy tricks, no time for any extraneous flair. There is only a single strike, a blow which will frighten even the gods, one that will pierce the heart always.

The heartseeker is an archetype of the dragoon class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The heartseeker loses proficiency in medium and heavy armor.

Limit Break (Su): At 1st level, the heartseeker receives the limit break Perfect Form.

Perfect Form (Su): This Limit Break allows the heartseeker to reach the pinnacle of spearfighting for the briefest of moments. Upon activating this Limit Break as a swift action, the heartseeker's attacks ignore all resistances, evasion, DR, or any other effect which would hinder his strikes for 1 round + 1 additional round per 4 heartseeker levels.

This Limit Break replaces the dragoon's Falling Meteor limit break.

Darting Blows: The heartseeker uses his Dexterity modifier, rather than his Strength modifier, for the purposes of attack rolls with any spears, lances, or polearms. At 3rd level, the heartseeker may choose one weapon with which he may apply his Dexterity modifier, rather than his Strength modifier, to damage.

This ability replaces the dragoon's Jump ability.

Peerless Strike: The heartseeker has abandoned all techniques which do not serve to further his perfection with the spear, and sees no use in a maneuver which does not drive his weapon directly where it needs to be. As a full-round action, the heartseeker may make a single unerring melee attack with his spear, necessitating no attack roll against AC, but still affected by concealment, mirror images, and other such effects. This attack deals only the weapon's base damage roll, and can benefit from no other bonuses, including masterwork bonuses and weapon enchantments.

This ability replaces the dragoon's Deadly Lancer ability.

Evasive Training: The heartseeker, having forgone heavier armors which might encumber him, has proven to be a very agile target. If he makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, he instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if the heartseeker is wearing light armor, or no armor. A helpless heartseeker (such as one who is unconscious or paralyzed) does not gain the benefit of evasion.

This ability replaces the dragoon's Armor Training ability.

Unrivaled Technique: Ever improving both in mind and body, the heartseeker works only to perfect his form. At 4th level, he may use his peerless strike ability with a thrown spear or other similar weapon. At 8th level, he may apply his Dexterity modifier to damage rolls when using his peerless strike. At 12th level, he may apply a weapon's damage bonuses when using peerless strike. At 16th level, he may roll for a critical hit when using peerless strike. At 20th level, his peerless strike gains a death attack, requiring a Fortitude save against a DC equal to 25 + the heartseeker's Dexterity modifier. This death attack may not be saved against by creatures of CR 5 and below.

This ability replaces the dragoon's Hardy Landing ability.

Measured Steps: The heartseeker knows where he needs to be on the battlefield, and will not let anything stop him. If he so chooses, he may reduce his speed by 10 ft for one round, gaining the ability to move both before and after an attack, assuming he does not exceed his now-reduced speed.

This ability replaces the dragoon's Springing Charge ability.

One with the Spear: One more step, one more improvement. At 11th level, the heartseeker may not be disarmed of his weapon, assuming he holds a spear, lance, or other such weapon, and may not have it sundered.

This ability replaces the dragoon's Mighty Charge ability.

Shellpiercer: The heartseeker's Shellbreaker ability applies to his Peerless Strike.

This ability modifies the dragoon's Shellbreaker ability.

Misdirecting Steps: Having furthered his agile maneuvers and positioning, the heartseeker has mastered the art of misdirection. At 14th level, if the heartseeker makes a successful attack against an enemy, and their opposite side is within range of his Measured Steps, he may choose to move there as an immediate action (provoking an Attack of Opportunity) and make a second attack at the same attack bonus, gaining a flanking bonus.

Measured Speed: The heartseeker is a nightmare on the battlefield, instilling fear in his enemies merely by his omnipresence. At 18th level, the heartseeker's base speed increases by 10 feet, and he takes no penalties to his speed when using Measured Steps.

Pike Offense: The heartseeker is not here to protect. He is here only to reach perfection. At 19th level, when an opponent threatened by a dragoon makes a melee attack against an ally, he may take an immediate action to make an attack against the opponent at a +2 to hit and damage.

This ability replaces the dragoon's Pike Defense ability.

Godspear: The heartseeker has achieved all there is to achieve with the spear. His skill has reached such a level that there is nothing left that could be done, and no way he could be surpassed, and even the gods fear him. Any being slain by the heartseeker can never be resurrected by any means, and his spear is treated as having bane against all foes.

This ability replaces the dragoon's Leaping Charge ability.
