Eidolons, espers, and gods...Oh My!
#3
Primal Eidolon: On the world of Hydaelyn exists a type of eidolon summoned not by the will of gods or the whim of summoners but by the mythopoetic faith of worshipers. This is a natural reaction of the crystals resonating with planar energy in places of ambient aether. The summoned entity is called a “primal eidolon” (or more colloquially just called a “Primal”) for though it is technically an emanation of a deity or other form of higher being, it was brought into existence on the material plane by a plurality of wills and subconscious desires. This makes the primal far more powerful than a conventional eidolon but also far more destructive to the natural world. What’s worse is that the nature of the primal can be corrupted by the sphere of its summoners, causing it to exaggerate more negative aspects of the original being. Even the primal of the just and noble Bahamut can be twisted into a force of vengeance and destruction.

Normally, primals are summoned by the beast tribes of Eorzea but there have been incidents where the noble races participated in such events. However, a primal is rarely content with just the worship of its summoners. Through a process called “tempering,” intelligent creatures can be turned into devout fanatics of the primal against their will. As a primal gathers more worshipers and crystals its power swells. So many primals use tempering to both enslave and empower their ranks.

As capricious and callous as they can be, primal eidolons often have the best intentions of their followers at heart, like a parent to a child. Strangely, this form affection extends to tempered worshipers regardless of their race.
