Armored red mage question

I had a question about the red mage "Armored Mage" class feature and the "Armored Mage (Leather)[General]" feat, because at level 3 the red mage automatically gains the equivalent of this feat (but also gets to use light shields), so i was wondering if i could get the armored mage leather feat at level 1, so that way i don't have to wait until level 3 to be able to cast in leather without spell failure chance. it looks like a waste of a feat selection in the long run, but i want to know if that is ok to do.
