On an Engineer's automaton do you roll its hit die or does it get the average?

an additional question if its not too much trouble. is there a way for the engineer archetype puppetmaster to have its automaton Integrate more than 3 pieces of equipment? with 5 modes, 3 doesnt even cover weapons, let alone sheilds and ammunition for ranged weapons.

or is it more of a pick one or two modes and just equip for that sort of thing?

Added this line:  plus an additional equipment for every four engineer levels after 1st
