How about a set of weapon and armor enhancements that add a materia slots for the cost of a +1 bonus per slot added? For example a +5 greatsword with 5 extra slots (maxing out the total +10 bonus a weapon could have) would have a total of 8 slots and a +5 to attack and damage.
